About village : Kawlbem is an important village in the eastwhile North-East Mizoram. The name of the village is derived from Paite words 'KAWL' means 'Rocky Hill' and 'BEM' means 'Round'. The temperature at Kawlbem is very low and very cold during winter. It is very much moderate during summer. The temperature there in Kawlbem is like Shillong, Meghalaya.Kawlbem village is very rich in flora and fauna. One can see beautiful and crimson red flower of rhododendron during summer. It is sorrounded by beautiful pine/fir trees. There are some wild flowers which are very scarce in other parts of the world. Many wild animals had been visible during the past few years. Unfortunately, those wild animals like Bengal Tiger, Beer, Stag, Deer, Monkey, Porcupine, Wild boar, etc are becoming extinct due to poaching by gun bearers who are mostly from urban areas. The climate is very congenial for cultivating potatoes. One can reach the village by road from Champhai or from Aizawl via Ngopa. It can also be reached by copter by landing on the helipad which had once used by the Indian Army during insurgency period in Mizoram. At the village, one can have a clear landscape view of Myanmar. If the village is properly developed, it would fetch a good revenue from foreign tourists.Strangely, inhabitants do not want to take crabs though the rivers are very rich in crabs. The people are very laborious and self reliant in food products.
The inhabitants of Kawlbem vilage are Christian by faith, so there is no other temple or mosque. One each of the following Christian denominations are available:- Presbyterian Church, Assembly of God, United Penticostal Church, Zomi Baptist Church and Evangelical Baptist Church. Among these Churches, the Presbyterian Church and the Evangelical Baptist Church play leading roles.
Village Administration : Earlier they had Chief which has now been replaced by Village Council by electoral process. In the VC, there are the Village Council President, Vice President and the Secretary.
NGO / volunters : The notable NGO at Kawlbem village are Young Mizo Association (YMA) which render social service to the needy and the poor and Village Defence Party (VDP) which guards the welfare and security of the villagers as well as any stranger. The VDP combat social evils like gambling, alcohol.
Bus / Train / Transport : One can reach the village by Bus or Maxi Cab from Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram (India). It is about 220km from Aizawl. The most easiest means of transport within the village are your two legs or take a horse ride from village inhabitants.
Education Schools Colleges:Currently there are 5 institutions in Kawlbem, viz Kawlbem English School (run by Evangelical Baptist Convention), Presbyterian English School (run by Synod Presbyterian), Govt. Primary School, Govt. Middle School & Govt. High School. No children are found without getting education. The village, though situated in a remote area, usually comes up with good results in HSLC Examinations compare to its neighbouring villages.By seeing the students' performances in the field of education, I personally believed that the State Govt wouldn't be sorry if students were given the opportunity to get higher studies in the village.
